Move from HTTP to HTTPS with Let's Encrypt Free SSL/TLS Certificates

    [IMG][/IMG]
After the new HTTPS upgrades, many people are asking why we should upgrade to HTTPS, our website is doing fine and there’s no reason to upgrade. Then why should we shift from HTTP to HTTPS? The reason behind why you should upgrade is simple because HTTPS is the most secure and faster protocol which can also make your website faster. It is not a new thing that Google wants to make web more secure and faster and for this purpose Google is running their campaign for shifting towards HTTPS. Google has announced that HTTPS protocol will be used as a ranking factor for the websites. Google has taken initiatives in this regard and has started indexing secured and non-secured pages. Google is so ambitious about this upgrade that they even made their own guide about why you should move to HTTPS.
Despite all the benefits for the website owners and SEO’s, only a small amount of websites have been converted to HTTPS. There are many reasons for this slow shifting, some of which are entry barriers, complete updating of websites, lengthy procedures and CDN issues.
    Reasons for moving towards HTTPS:
There are many reasons for why you should shift to HTTPS. Some of the most important and basic reasons are:

    • More secure:

According to Google, data sent through HTTPS protocol is more secured than any other protocol. This is because the data sent is secured through transport layer security (TLS) protocol. Transport layer security protocol is the most advanced protocol and provides more secure connection for sending data. Security doesn’t means that the website is secured against outside attacks; it simply means that the web is more secure for the user. This means that there is no way that user’s data can be hacked although the website can be hacked even if HTTPS protocol is used.

    • Better Encryption:

Encryption means to convert the data into a coded language which can be decrypted later. TLS provides better encryption to data that is being sent. This means that the user’s information is more secure like when a user is surfing the internet, nobody can find out what the user is searching.

    • Data integrity:

Data integrity means that the data cannot be modified or changed during the exchange. It basically provides protection to the data exchange between user and the website. It can be used to build user trust. HTTPS ensures better and improved data integrity.

    • Authentication:

Have you ever encountered a situation when you are surfing a website and suddenly a pop-up appears irrelevant to the data being displayed on the website? I have encountered in such a situation many times and I can assure you it is very annoying. Authentication means that the website is more secure against third-party pop-up attacks. This means that with HTTPS, your website is more secure against third party pop-ups and the user communicates with the intended website only. This increases trust of the user and will cultivate other business benefits for the website.

    • Https to be used as a ranking factor:

Google is continuously striving to make the web more secure and fast for the users. For this purpose Google has taken many initiatives, one of which is Google’s HTTPS everywhere campaign. In this campaign, Google announced to use HTTPS protocol as a rank booster for the websites. So, this means websites which have shifted towards HTTPS will have a better ranking on Google. This means if you want to save your website from closing down, you need to switch to HTTPS protocol.
    Hurdles in switching:
The website owners and SEO professionals encounter 3 hurdles when shifting to HTTPS. These hurdles include the costs of shifting, lengthy and tiring updates, and sometimes, website is not ready for the shift. The first hurdle for the shift is its high cost. Website owner’s argue that why should they shift when the costs for the shift are very high and their existing website is doing well. The answer to this question is simple if you don’t shift now, you might get out of business in the future. My personal opinion about the shift is different; I think that website owners should not consider the costs alone; they should also consider the benefits this shift will bring to their business. The benefits of this shift are way more than costs of the shift.
Some business owners don’t shift due to the long and tiring process. They argue that why we should go through this long and tiring process. What is the need? This is true that the shifting process requires lengthy and tiring updates which can be very annoying. But the owners should also think about shift as an opportunity or as a threat to their business and should take proper action to remain in the competition.
The third hurdle that limits the shift to HTTPS is that website is not ready for the shift. This is true because it is not possible that everything is ready for the change. It needs some updating of the system to make the website ready for the shift.
    Switching to HTTPS made easy:
There are many hurdles in switching to HTTPS protocol but from the above discussion, it is clear that switching is inevitable if you want to remain competitive in the market. Switching is a very lengthy and time consuming process which requires long and tiring updates if you do it manually, but fortunately, last year in May, 2015 a service was launched by the name Let’s Encrypt which offers free HTTPS switching.
What is Let’s Encrypt and how it works:

Let’s encrypt was launched by International Security Research Group (ISRG), it is a free open source certificate authority that automates the process of turning on and managing HTTPS. The objective of Let’s Encrypt is to set up an HTTPS server and to obtain a trusted certificate automatically and easily without any human interface.
The working of Let’s Encrypt is easy and does not require lengthy procedures. You only have to install Let’s Encrypt agent on the web server and the agent will automatically validate the domain. Once the validation in complete, the agent will send request to the server to issue certificate for the domain. Switching to HTTPS is this easy with Let’s Encrypt.
    Let’s Encrypt Major Sponsor includes:
