    High Blood Pressure: Quick Facts

    Normal blood pressure (BP) is 140/90mm Hg, or less. When your blood pressure is higher than this, it is high.

    High blood pressure is very common and occurs in up to 1/3 of adults. It is the most common cause of sudden death in someone who had appeared healthy.

    High Blood Pressure is harmful to your body. It damages major organs in the body- the heart, the kidneys, blood vessels, the eyes. High blood pressure causes Stroke and heart attack. High Blood Pressure has no symptoms most of the time. You wont know unless you check.

    Risk Factors

    • Inactivity
    • Being overweight
    • Eating too much salt
    • Drinking too much alcohol
    • High Cholesterol
    • Not eating enough fruit and vegetables
    • A family history of high blood pressure.
    • Stress
    • Disease conditions e.g. kidney disease
    • Drug induced e.g. some contraceptive pills
    • Age prevalent in ages between 25 and 55yrs
    • Race – it affects blacks mostly.

    What Do You Do?
    Check your blood pressure regularly anytime you visit a clinic or hospital. If your blood pressure is consistently high, you may need to invest in a portable blood pressure monitor available in pharmacies for about Rupees 3000-5000 RS.

    If your blood pressure is high, seek medical advice. Stick to your medication until your doctor decides you are in the clear.

    Avoid the risk factors listed above (of course except the last two, which you can do nothing about). Get regular exercise, lose weight, cut down salt intake, avoid worry and anxiety etc.

    With focus and consistency in making the required lifestyle changes, you can bring your blood pressure back within the normal range
