The Japanese have Proven Benefit of Chewing Gum

The benefits and harms of medical chewing gum long debate. Another positive effect of chewing gum found hobbies Japanese scientists: it enhances the brain by 10% and increases alertness, writes The Daily Mail.

The study found that chewing activates the eight different areas of the cerebral cortex through a temporary increase blood supply. During the 30-minute tests that require quick response and the concentration of the brain, the volunteers chewed gum. Brain activity during the performance of tasks was measured by MRI.

It was found that chewing participants coped with the tasks on average 10% faster (they needed to solve the problem 493 milliseconds) than volunteers in the control group (up to the task for 545 milliseconds).

"The impact of chewing gum on the response time is very important. Our results show that chewing caused the volunteers raise arousal and alertness, improves cognitive function," - commented on the staff of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Japan.

Meanwhile, conducted last year, the experiment showed that chewing gum impairs short-term memory.

Results of the study published in the scientific journal Brain and Cognition.
