Wise vs Payoneer: Which Costs You Less as a Pakistani Freelancer?

A real-numbers comparison of Wise and Payoneer for receiving international payments in Pakistan — fees, exchange rates, withdrawal speed, and when each one wins.

You'll see "Wise vs Payoneer" debates online that never include actual numbers. This one does. We ran the math on three realistic payment sizes and tracked what actually lands in your Pakistani bank account.

The short version#

  • Wise wins on cost (lower fees, mid-market exchange rate). Best for direct clients.
  • Payoneer wins on compatibility (works with Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon, and clients who only trust "established" services). Best for marketplace payouts.
  • Use both. They serve different purposes and cost nothing to keep open.

The fee structures, plainly#

Wise#

  • Receiving money: Free for most currencies (USD, EUR, GBP) into your Wise account.
  • Converting money: Mid-market exchange rate + a small fee (0.4–1% depending on currency pair). This is the actual rate you see on Google, plus a small markup.
  • Withdrawing to Pakistani bank: Small fee (~Rs. 250–500) + your bank's incoming remittance charges.
  • No monthly fees. No minimum balance.

Payoneer#

  • Receiving money from marketplaces (Upwork/Fiverr/Amazon): Free.
  • Receiving from clients (Billing Service): ~2% fee on top of the payment.
  • Converting money: Payoneer's exchange rate, which is typically 2–2.5% below the mid-market rate. This is the hidden cost.
  • Withdrawing to Pakistani bank: 2% fee (below the mid-market rate). Minimum withdrawal $50.
  • Annual fee: $29.95, waived if you received $1,000+ in the year. Most active freelancers never pay this.

Real numbers: what lands in your bank#

We tracked three realistic scenarios. Exchange rate assumed: 1 USD = 280 PKR (mid-market).

Scenario 1: $200 from a direct client#

Method Conversion fee Withdrawal fee PKR received
Wise ~$1.50 (0.75%) ~Rs. 300 ~Rs. 55,480
Payoneer ~$5 (2.5% rate margin) ~$4 (2%) ~Rs. 53,560
Bank wire ~$8 (3% rate margin) ~$30 (SWIFT) ~Rs. 50,400

Wise wins by ~Rs. 2,000 on a small payment. The gap widens as the amount grows.

Scenario 2: $1,000 from Upwork#

Method Upwork fee Conversion + withdrawal PKR received
Direct to local bank (Upwork) Upwork's rate (~2.5% margin) + ~$30 bank fee ~Rs. 271,200
Payoneer from Upwork ~2% Payoneer margin ~Rs. 274,400
Wise (not available as direct Upwork method for all) ~0.6% Wise margin ~Rs. 278,200

Wise is best but only available from Upwork in certain configurations. Payoneer from Upwork beats direct-to-bank.

Scenario 3: $3,000 from a long-term client#

Method Total cost PKR received
Wise ~$25 (0.8%) ~Rs. 833,000
Payoneer ~$75 (2.5%) ~Rs. 819,000
Bank wire ~$90 (3%) + $50 SWIFT ~Rs. 802,200

On $3,000, Wise saves ~Rs. 14,000–31,000 over alternatives. That's real money — a month of groceries.

Speed#

  • Wise: USD → PKR withdrawal typically 1–3 business days.
  • Payoneer: Withdrawal to Pakistani bank 1–4 business days.
  • Bank wire: 3–7 business days, sometimes longer if a compliance review triggers.

Wise is fastest on average. None are instant.

When Wise wins#

  • Direct clients paying you via USD ACH, EUR SEPA, or GBP bank transfer
  • Larger payments ($500+) where the rate difference compounds
  • When you want to hold USD/EUR and convert when the rate is favorable

When Payoneer wins#

  • Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon, Etsy payouts (built-in integration)
  • Clients who only trust "established" payment services (some corporate clients have Payoneer in their vendor systems)
  • When you need a prepaid Mastercard for international spending (Payoneer offers this, Wise doesn't in Pakistan)

The setup both require#

Both services require KYC verification:

  • CNIC (or passport)
  • Proof of address — utility bill or bank statement in your name
  • Bank account in your name for withdrawals

The name on Wise/Payoneer must match the name on your receiving bank account. Mismatch = frozen funds.

Setup time: 2–5 business days for verification. Do this before you have a client waiting to pay you.

The "free money" trick most freelancers miss#

Both Wise and Payoneer let you hold USD/EUR in your account. Don't auto-convert every payment.

  • If the PKR is weakening (it has been, for years), hold USD and convert when you need PKR.
  • If you have international expenses (SaaS subscriptions, ads, tools), pay them directly from your USD balance — no double conversion.
  • Set a "convert when PKR hits X" rule and stick to it.

Over a year of $2,000/month income, holding and converting strategically can save Rs. 50,000–100,000 vs. auto-converting every payment.

The red flags (avoid these)#

  • Using a friend's or relative's account. Against both platforms' ToS. Funds get frozen, accounts get closed.
  • Receiving from crypto exchanges into Wise/Payoneer. Flagged instantly.
  • Sudden large deposits inconsistent with your history. Ramp up gradually.
  • Inconsistent information between your Wise profile, Payoneer profile, bank, and CNIC. Use identical name spelling everywhere.

The verdict#

Open both accounts this week. Use Wise as your primary for direct clients. Use Payoneer for marketplace payouts. Total cost of having both: zero. Total time to set up: a few hours of paperwork.

Don't optimize the 0.3% difference between them at the cost of not getting paid at all. Get both set up, then focus on finding the client.
